A recognised leader in the water, energy and sustainable development sectors, Ashok has 40+ years of experience designing and implementing transformative solutions. He has led impressive projects and programmes in his long career in the areas of water metering, desalination, wastewater treatment, industrial water supply and urban water infrastructure
Delighted to share that I was an individual contributor to the Smart Metering Playbook: Compendium of Resources for WRF Subscribers under the SWAN Forum.
It was an enriching experience to interact with SWAN Forum members and exchange insights on Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Meter Data Management, and analytics, supported by case studies from leading water utilities worldwide.
These learnings proved immensely valuable in my role as adviser to Chennai Metro Water, where they helped shape a smart metering tender founded on open standards, interoperability, and prudent risk mitigation.
I am particularly happy that the tender — structured under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) and Metering-as-a-Service (MaaS) approach, perhaps for the first time in India — has now been awarded to a developer/concessionaire for about USD 42 million, with implementation scheduled over the next two years.
A satisfying example of how knowledge-sharing at a global forum can directly contribute to practical, scalable public infrastructure outcomes in India.

SWAN is the leading global forum for Smart Metering and Smart Systems, bringing together 150+ utilities to explore key advancements in AI, Digital Twins, and Decarbonization.
